She’d felt excited, yet thinking of the cousin’s name unleashed more unpleasant memories from the past. Now, she wanted to know where Sunbury Avenue was and purposely left the apartment to ask the owner of a newsagent’s close by. ‘I have a feeling it’s somewhere near King’s Park, but I can’t be sure,’ the woman had said.
At eight o’clock the next morning, John opened the wooden gate and stood outside the rear entrance to his Aunt Louisa’s apartment block, waiting for his mum to open the security door. He squeezed through the opening and, feeling as pleased as punch, told her about finding a third green bus pass in the town.
‘I’ve used it a few times and I can ride anywhere in the town. A blue one is for a bit further and with a red one I can visit other towns and villages. Yesterday I went for a ride and saw the Olympic pool and the big academy. You remember, Mum? I discovered it on my first bus ride. Tons of kids go there. If I find a red one, I’m going for a trip along the coast,’ he whispered as they went up the staircase.
In the bathroom, he was eager to remove his dirty clothes and stepped into a warm bath of bubbles. Relaxing in the water, he cut his nails, scrubbed his feet with a green brush and washed his hair. After drying himself, he dressed in clean clothes before sitting with his mum to enjoy a plate of fried bacon and egg.
Whilst finishing a round of toast and sipping a cup of tea, she wanted to know if he’d mind taking a bus to King’s Park.
