Reserve Physical Training Instructor
by LCpl Isabel Howe 101 MWD Sqn
In October 2021, I was offered the opportunity to attend the Reserve All Arms Physical
Training Instructors course at Fox Lines, Army School of Physical Training Aldershot. The course consisted of 80 reserve soldiers attending from different Regiments and Corps across the Army in
order to gain the qualification of Army Reserve Physical Training Instructor.
The course began with the initial Soldier Conditioning Review (SCR) selection test which consisted of various aspects of the SCR to the PTI standard, finishing with a 2KM best effort run with the minimum required standard of under 8min 10s. After completing the PTI selection tests, I joined 40 others in completing the new Role Fitness Test (RFT), which will be rolled out to the wider Army Reserve from Apr 22. I found the test both challenging and enjoyable, especially as the initial weight for the RFT was over
three quarters of my body weight! After passing the physical tests,
I attended lectures on anatomy, physiology and current Army fitness policy. I found the theory engaging as it focused in detail on the benefits of strength and conditioning and
its application to physical training in order to reduce the likelihood
of muscular skeletal injuries. This also made me rethink in how I train in the gym and in a sporting environment, as I had learnt how
I could implement the scientific theory that I had learnt into maximising sporting performance.
Having passed the theory tests, I created and lead two specific lessons on muscular endurance and hypertrophy. I found leading the lessons both challenging and enjoyable.
I was proud to pass out as a qualified RAAPTI and be awarded my swords by the Army School of Physical Training. I am looking forward to performing my role as
a PTI for 101 MWD (Res) Sqn and assisting 1st Military Working Dog Regiment in conducting physical training sessions.
I hope to use my qualification in order to conduct Adventure Training for soldiers within 1 MWD Regt to develop soldier’s confidence and leadership skills within challenging and austere environments. I would recommend this course to anyone.
AWAMO Remembrance
The Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) was represented across Australia on Remembrance Day 11 November 2021 from
the large AWAMO sponsored Clydesdale Pilot who represents all heavy horses to a retired Afghanistan canine veteran Explosive Detection dog (EDD).
The EDD is wearing the new operational Canine Service medal. Many such dogs served for two years on active duty in Afghanistan (equivalent to 14 human years). In addition to their primary role, the dogs were also
a reminder of home for deployed soldiers, the dogs put smiles
on faces in a place that was in desperate need of some morale boosting. AWAMO is proud to
support several retired dogs through fiscal aid and dog food. AWAMO also remains committed to provide funds to Veteran Service dogs- as the Government does not.
