introduced to a great number of people from different ‘walks of life’ and new friends were made – many new friends. This was the therapy I personally needed to cope with the heartache of being away from school for such a long time.
I must too thank every school that took part for I knew that to organise something like this just didn’t ‘happen’. In agreeing to this the head would have had to talk about it with his/her staff, with the children, write letters to parents, allow time in the timetable for the staff to work with the children to make their hats, or liaise with parents if hats were being made at home. Then there would have been discussions with the children about bringing in their 50p’s (as was the suggested amount); arranging to collect the
sa ‘gentle’ man and enjoyed being with children as the children loved it when he came in to listen
money, count it and arrange to get it to us – and then the management of the ‘The Day’, knowing how excitable children become on Mufti days! I was lucky in that, the Chair of Governors, Cyril Smith, who was in post when I first started at Highfields, (later to be replaced), kindly offered to co-ordinate the money coming in from all the schools and other outlets. Cyril was a ‘gentle’ man and enjoyed being with children as the children loved it when he came in to listen to them read. Before he retired, he held an important position at KGH training nurses so he was well known to some members of the Breast Care Team – and highly respected. Cyril affectionately became the official. Crazy Hats’ ‘Money
Man’ and was so helpful.
