Do you remember me talking about John (in ‘Finding It’?). You know, the little boy from Julie’s class who, when my class and I were walking along the corridor to have lunch, casually spoke to me saying he hoped God would take the cancer away from me. I said I hoped He would too. Standing in front of the whole school, this day, I suddenly spotted John. He was sitting on his haunches, wildly waving at me, keen to get my attention. He’d got it. I waved back. John sat more upright and sticking both thumbs up, mouthed: “He’s done it then!” How I loved those children!
From Highfields, Margaret and her colleagues took me to meet everyone at KGH – back to Ashton Ward. I was fortunate and thrilled when nurses – ‘Nurse Weed’, Shirley, Pam, Caroline and others who looked after me had rallied round beforehand to invite ex-patients, colleagues from other departments, decorate one of the day wards with pink balloons, dressed up for the occasion, organised a cake sale and even had a wonderful ‘booby’ cake made, raising almost £600 themselves on the day! Furthermore, to have four members of the Breast Care Team – Margaret, Trudy, Anne and Helen, accompany me for the whole of the day was, indeed, a privilege and very much appreciated. A deed like that would never happen today so, again, I was very blessed. It was humbling to know how everyone had worked so hard and so wonderful that my Bosom Pal (Margaret ’86) was there with Jean, another of our ‘bed mates’, and many of Margaret’s friends.
Having returned to the hospital, where I was forced to sit down for a few minutes, our next port of call, with the Breast Care Team, was to Wellingborough to visit Victoria Junior School, now under a new
