   Diary extract: 15.03.2002
“Hardly slept last night but felt
amazingly calm, yet excited as
I drove to school in my hat and
gown. I felt so proud, so humbled
and so honoured and absolutely
loved every minute. The children
and staff were excited too. (I was
nervous, hoping very much that my
wig would not move under the pink
mortar board.) I stood by the outside
door to greet the special guests – the
Mayor and Mayoress, Councillors
Bob and Barbara Civil, Phil Sawford
MP, (who wore a huge sombrero),
Muriel Wallis, my ex-music teacher “ and her choir, residents from a nearby care home, the Breast Care
Team, Governors, Parents... and my Mum who had brought a new suit
for the occasion (which had to go with her hat)! She had been picked
up by ‘Chemo Sue’ who had decorated her hat with all her arty bits
and pieces. (Sue also donated some of her pig prints that were sold
at the hospital and raised more money). It was all very happy, and
emotional, but I had yet to greet the children and staff – and I had an
assembly to lead! Out of respect, I agreed that Sandra (Deputy Head)
should welcome everyone. It felt really strange to be introduced and to
be standing up front with such a multitude of different people. I loved
it! It all seemed so natural. We sang, we listened to the choir (Muriel
was on top form and memories of St. Peter’s came back). We listened
to addresses by the Mayor, the MP and Margaret, we prayed for ‘poorly
people’, we prayed for our nurses and doctors and I gave a long vote
I felt so proud,
so humbled and so honoured and absolutely loved every minute. ”
