– an en-suite in the main bedroom). We also stipulated that anyone who used the Home was to ensure it was cleaned thoroughly before the next people went in and always made sure cleaning supplies were in good supply. Avon generously donated men’s and ladies toiletries for the bathrooms.
Like all new ventures, there were
a few issues where cleaning was,
for a short while, a problem and
we sadly, had to make the decision
not to allow children (under the age
of 16) as, in a matter of weeks of it
opening there had been damage to certain items. This caused a bit of a stir but, although we could see both sides, we stood by our terms, stating the Holiday Home was for breast cancer patients to get away from it all, including their children. This was a time for them, personally, to be there on their own, with their husband, partner or adult friends – it wasn’t set up for a children’s seaside holiday.
Our members loved it and soon we received requests from both KGH and NGH asking if we would consider allowing more patients to spend time there. Of course we could. Our Holiday Home was well-used and much enjoyed and appreciated by many. In time, to make things a little easier, we employed a cleaner, who already worked on the site, to go in after each person left – to ensure it was 100% clean. Overall it was a wonderful addition to our services and we felt so sad when Covid hit – and later when we had to sell it.
