garden, hopefully later this year (2023) that has been designed by expert garden landscapers from Bosworths in Burton Latimer – a local company that supported Crazy Hats (our Trustees insisting that we had, at least one local firm on board – a Crazy Hats’ legacy.) We are represented on the hospital’s Project Management Team so we shall be pushing them on!
Prior to closure we had worked
closely with a ladies lingerie
company (Amoena) who specialised
in mastectomy bras and swimwear. “ With Amoena we liaised with the Breast Clinic at Northampton
and devised a scheme for ‘newly diagnosed’ ladies to receive a complimentary bra, courtesy of Crazy Hats (with Avon contributing toiletries). The patients had to be measured, of course, so Amoena gave us all training and we set up a similar system at the Office whereby patients could be measured, try bras on and buy them at a reduced rate. We even held a bra fitting social evening at Wickseed Park where ladies could see what was on offer and be measured. It was packed! We should have ended by 10.00pm – at 11.30pm the queue to be measured was just as long as when we started at 7.00pm! £20,000, therefore, was donated to NGH to support this scheme.
A further £20k from the excess funds was donated to the Plastics & Burns Department at Leicester Royal – a department that Marilyn (and I) visited often to have dressings changed. It was still policy for North- amptonshire patients to go to Leicester for and following certain breast reconstruction procedures. The donation will be used to ‘spruce up’ their area too. As yet, this hasn’t been done, which is disappointing but, like Kettering, we keep pushing
them. In addition Trustees agreed to
donate another £20k to fund new
chairs in the chemotherapy waiting
area at Leicester. Having been with
Marilyn for her thirty six sessions
and having sat in almost all of the
chairs we seriously felt they were
just not suitable, or comfortable, for
cancer patients, some of whom were
very poorly, and for loved ones and
carers who often had to sit there for
several hours. We are pleased to say
that project has been completed –
the new chairs being well-received.
We even held
a bra fitting
social evening at
Wickseed Park
where ladies
could see what
was on offer and
be measured. ”
