am certain, could tell a few stories. Mavis, although a very kind and friendly person was quite laid-back, which was frustrating in many ways as it was so hard to instigate change and move things forward, as was my brief, and just after a year or so, she decided to retire. The LEA decided to bring in an acting head to cover the period of there not being a substantive Head. Enter Kevin, an established Headteacher from another local Junior school.
Prior to Mavis’ departure in 1995, the school was 100 years old, so we organised a huge timetable of events to celebrate the occasion.
Knowing that so many children from Wellingborough would have attended the school, we set up a stand for a week in the local shopping centre to invite members of the public to sign up and submit stories of their time at Victoria and to invite them to a planned reunion. It was an amazing success with over 300 people coming along from all areas of the country and abroad – ex-pupils, ex-teachers, dignitaries and other invited guests. We had worked hard to put together rooms exhibiting memorabilia, old logbooks, photographs, artefacts, reports, letters and anything ‘Victorian’. In addition, we organised a Victorian Day where all staff and children dressed up and where ‘Queen Victoria’ (AKA Glennis!) was to be in attendance to present all children and staff with a one-off medal we had designed for ‘good service’. We were very fortunate to have Peter Gadd, alias Arnold Peters from ‘The Archers’
 “‘Queen Victoria’ (AKA Glennis!)
was to be in attendance. ”
