After leaving the relentless tempo of RMAS and being assigned to Andover Support Unit in mid-May, I was certainly looking forward to a quieter life with more social working hours. However, with 2,873 personnel on camp and the majority of which being Senior Of cers; there was no such luck!
Within my rst two months, I was organising a 4* sports day/ BBQ for the entire camp and gratefully this came with a healthy budget. The day was a great success and I can now see why so much effort goes into that one day. The personnel at Army HQ are
extremely busy and to entice them away from their desk to sit in the sun, play sport and eat BBQ food is a nice way to give back.
Working at Army HQ certainly has its abnormalities, such as; a 3* giving you an of ce call to discuss their PFA or the presenting Of cer on your monthly competitions is a minimum of a 1*. Needless to say, I have really enjoyed my short tenure at ASpU/Army HQ and it has certainly opened my eyes to the wider Army.

Seven members of the Army Inspectorate along with two attached JNCOs from other units deployed on Ex TUMBLING REVIEW, a Type 2 Unit group Adventurous Training (UGAT) course that was conducted in Dhekelia, Cyprus in March 2017. Delivered by the Joint Services Adventurous Training Wing (Cyprus) this course saw participants take part in Parachuting, Rock Climbing and Canoe/Kayaking (multi-craft). The 5-day package was extremely well received with all Staff Of cers (ranked between Capt and Lt Col) having a fantastic week, with many sparking a keen interest in Parachuting. The majority of parachutists were rst timers including myself, an experience I will never forget and one I would encourage all to try.
Time was maximised during Ex TUMBLING REVIEW where we also took the opportunity to visit the United Nations Buffer Zone
in Cyprus. Patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), it was established in 1964 and extended in 1974 after the cease re of 16 August 1974, following the Turkish intervention of Cyprus, and de facto partition of the island into the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the North. The zone also known as the Green Line stretches for 180 kilometres from Paralimni in the east to Kato Pyrgos in the west, where a separate section surrounds Kokkina. The Green Line Tour was hosted on this occasion by 7 Regt RLC, the current British roulemont for the UN and followed the Green Line through the old town of Nicosia. It is absolutely worth factoring in a visit for anyone deploying to the island and can be easily arranged by contacting the in place British Regiment.
