1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery Tug of War team was re- established in March 2022 after a two year break due to COVID19. The new team was almost entirely made up of first
year pullers. Tug of War is a grueling hard sport whereby strength alone isn’t enough to compete, a team must train together regu- larly and learn the technique of pressure, patience and a hard drop to be an effective team.
The Regimental team have trained hard throughout the season to compete on the Army Tug of War outdoor circuit. The first competition of the season was the Jack Smiths Memorial Cham- pionship, held in Larkhill in May, the team performed admirably achieving second in the Ladies 580Kg, second in the men’s 620Kg and third in the mixed 4x4 600Kg.
After much training the team entered the Army Championships held in June, hosted by 13 Sig- nal Regiment in Colerne and achieved, fourth place in the men’s 600Kg, 640Kg and 680Kg weight categories, second in the 520kg
and 1st place in the 560Kg ladies’ cat- egories and finally third in the 4x4 580Kg.

The Gunner Pull, the annual Royal Regiment of Artillery Champi- onships were held in its traditional location of Larkhill in late June. The competition is run effectively as two competitions within one, the Open, which is open to all cap badges across the Army and the Closed which is for Royal Artillery units only. The team once again performed fantastically achieving, men’s 560Kg closed run- ners up receiving the Ray Newell dial sight, men’s 600Kg closed runners up receiving the Minden Man, men’s 640Kg closed win- ners receiving the Billy Rigg rose bowl and runners up in the mixed 4x4 580Kg receiving the Hard Hands trophy.
The season concluded with a Royal invitation to the Royal High- land Games in Braemar Scotland in September, this is a Tri-Ser- vice unit competition where the best teams from the three ser- vices competed in front of 16,000 people and members of the Royal family. The team trained extremely hard over the leave period, shedding weight to make the 640Kg weight category. The team’s performance was fantastic, the team made it to the semi-finals achieving a third place overall against much more experienced teams. The team looks forward to the start of the 2023 outdoor season, ready to exercise the experience learnt from this season with the aim of going one step further and
closing as winners in the competitions.
