This year the Regimental cricket team has taken on many challenges and revamping a new team, unfortunately this has seen the team unable to play any competitive cricket, but we were able to hold the yearly Officers v Seniors cricket match.
The Officers versus Seniors Cricket Match is a longstanding tra- dition which takes place on an annual basis during the summer months. The sport of cricket has a known history beginning in the late 16th century. Having originated in south-east of England, it became the country’s national sport in the 18th century and has developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Officers vs Seniors Cricket Match is a fixture steeped in rich history, offering those who participate the opportunity to win not only the prestigious trophy, but also eternal glory and “bragging rights” for their Mess. The fixture remains an opportunity for fun, social cohesion and teamwork in a relaxed environment.
The Officer’s Mess Captain, Capt Adam Davis, elected to bat first hoping to set a challenging total. The opening pair got the team off to a flying start buts some questionable shots and decidedly dodgy running limited the total, but the team still set a competi- tive score of 168. The Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess got off to a slow, but steady start with the early wicket partnerships setting a good foundation. At the halfway point they were ahead of the run rate, but some late wickets caused some nervousness in the final overs. Team Captain, WO2 Heggie hit the winning runs in the final over and brought victory to the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess. Overall, it was a hard fought match firmly
played in excellent spirit with many players stepping out onto the cricket field for the first time.
The team looks forwards to the challenges of the next season and the officer’s mess are hoping to regain the title having been defeated for the past two years.
