                                A WEEKEND ON THE WATER
By Staff Sergeant Instructor Donna Nixon
In June the County Adventure Training Officer, Lieutenant Paul Meares and Assistant Instructor
SSI Donna Nixon conducted Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and Kayak lessons, covering both Army Cadet Syllabus 3 Star Adventure Training and the British Canoeing Discovery Award at Welton Waters Activity Centre.
Rescue training was completed which also included cadets supporting being rescued for dog training with Newfoundland dogs from the local water safety teams.
The weekend ended with cadets using the Giant Paddleboards, where each group learned to fully work as a team to complete their journeys.
Cadet Corporal Olivia Law said: “it’s been a relatively relaxed weekend which is different to other military weekends. I’ve enjoyed learning the basics of how to handle the boards and boats properly. It’s harder than it looks. You have to learn to balance the board using your feet and body together. Boats are not easy, mine kept spinning round but with guidance from the instructors in the end I was going straight.”
A fantastic weekend to be a small part of, with all the cadets passing but leaving happy and wanting more!
With many thanks to Sergeant Major Instructor Kevin McDowall for organising the event and land based support staff Lt Steff Dodd and SI Diane Allen.
ARMY CADETS FROM HULL TAKE PARLIAMENT BY STORM
Cadets visit the Houses of Parliament to speak to MPs
By Capt Neil Bizzell
Two cadets from East Hull Detachment headed to London in July to brief local MPs on the benefits of the Army Cadet force experience.
Cadet Sergeants Annie Fairburn and Kieran Parker accompanied by Colonel Fred Owen and Colonel Simon Banks Cooper, the Honorary Colonel and Adult Under Office Nichola Boyce were welcomed into the Houses of Parliament to talk with local MPs.
After being fast tracked into the Central Lobby there was a short wait whilst a Bill was walked
Needless to say, they did their County, and the Army Cadet Force as a whole, proud
Parliament who represent constituencies in our County area.
The group consisted of The Rt. Hon Dame Rosie Winterton MP, Member of Parliament for Doncaster Central and Deputy Speaker, The Rt. Hon David Davis MP, MP for Haltemprice and Howden, Rt. Hon Alexander Stafford MP, MP for Rother Valley and Rt. Hon Martin Vickers MP, MP for Cleethorpes.
Colonel Simon Banks-Cooper said "All credit is due, and both rightly deserve praise and congratulations for their performance, spirit and courage. Courage, because being candid about one’s own childhood challenges at such a young age, as a means to provide context to the extent to which the Army Cadet Force has been a positive force for good, is no easy endeavour. Needless to say, they did their County, and the Army Cadet Force as a whole, proud."
After their presentation both cadets were presented with their Four Star certificates by the Rt. Hon Dame Rosie Winterton MP and were able to spend some time talking with her.
In return Dame Rosie was presented with a county cypher pin badge which she wore later in the week when presiding over the House.
