Adventures Afloat: A summer of
thrills at Scarborough Sea Cadets
By Lieutenant Gareth Davies
In the heart of Scarborough, a group of eager young cadets embarked on an unforgettable summer adventure. For eight exhilarating weeks, the Scarborough Sea Cadets set sail on a journey of discovery and skill-building, making the most of their time afloat.
The cadets honed their seamanship skills and harnessing the power of the wind as they sailed along the picturesque Scarborough coastline.
With windsurfing, they embraced the thrill of gliding across the water’s surface, testing their balance and courage in the face of challenging waves. Teamwork took centre stage as the cadets rowed in unison, fostering cooperation and strengthening their physical prowess.
They enjoyed power boating, as they took charge of vessels, learning precision control and in some cases qualifying as Safety Boat Helms. Other activities included in the 8 week programme included Mountain Biking and Stand Up Paddle Boarding
These activities not only provided adrenaline- pumping excitement but also instilled valuable life skills in the cadets. They learned to respect the water, trust their fellow crew members, and conquer their fears. Moreover, they discovered the importance of discipline, perseverance,
and responsibility.
As the summer came to a close,
cadets left the boat station not only with a wealth of nautical knowledge and qualifications but confidence
in their new found skills. Scarborough Sea Cadets
continue to inspire
and nurture
the leaders and adventurers of tomorrow through their dedication to maritime education and adventure.
Setting Sail with Scarborough Sea
Cadets: A Memorable Summer Camp
at HMS Raleigh and Jupiter Point
As the summer holidays started a group of enthusiastic cadets from Scarborough Sea Cadets travelled to The Eastern Area Sea Cadets Summer Camp at HMS Raleigh and Jupiter Point, where they joined cadets from all over the area for a week filled with unforgettable experiences on the water and onshore training.
HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy’s premier training establishment, nestled along the stunning Cornwall coastline, is renowned for its world-class facilities and immersive naval training programmes. For these sea cadets, it was the ideal setting to hone their skills and make memories to last a lifetime.
Congratulations to ACs Sonny Hague and Lucas Roach who gained their Seamanship Skills and Day Sailing module qualifications. But it wasn’t just smooth sailing all the way. The cadets encountered the unpredictable nature of the sea, experiencing firsthand the thrill of harnessing the wind’s power and the challenges of manoeuvring in strong tides in changing conditions.
Back onshore the intermediate seamanship course saw AC Sam Birkinshaw immerse himself in the intricacies of knots, rigging, sailing making, gaining an
appreciation for the
meticulous attention
to detail that defines a
true seaman.
A mention in dispatches to PO Nathan Davies who travelled with them and instructed sailing as part of the area summer camp training team.
