 RAPTC SPORT
170 (INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORT) ENGINEER GROUP
Sgt (SI) B Felix RAPTC
The RAPTC Basketball Team is slowly reinvigorating itself alongside the other sports in the Corps, having undergone changes in managerial appointments.
Having lost momentum in 2017, the designated Chairman’s intent was to enter the 2018 Army Basketball Inter Corps Championships (ICC) in order to return to competitive basketball as a Corps team.
Despite having players scattered all over on various commitments, the team was still able to engage in several friendly fixtures with civilian and military opponents in preparation for the 2018 Army Basketball ICC held at Prince William of Gloucester Barracks, Grantham. Due to a clash in the dates with the Army Netball tournament, our female team was unable to participate in this year’s Army Basketball ICC. SSgt (SSI) Kate Wallace however, (along with some assistance from SSgt (SSI) K Price) took her new role of team head coach head on as we engaged in the new campaign.
The 2018 Army Basketball ICC was hosted by the Royal Engineers. The RAPTC team won 2 out of the 4 games in our pool with our greatest victory coming against the Infantry. We placed 3rd in our pool, losing out only to the RE and RLC who were the overall finalists for the Championships; the RLC being crowned eventual Champions. Upon reflection, the team performed extremely well
SSgt (SSI) Miguel Francis clearly towers over his opponent with WO1 (SMI) Andy Balwah in his sight
in a tough, highly skilled pool; displaying some good individual performances but most importantly a team drive and determination on court that should bode us well for future competitions.
Striving to continuously build on this momentum, will see the RAPTC Basketball team promoting the sport within the Corps, scouting for new talent and developing the female team via a series of training sessions and games; culminating with a sports tour in the near future.
For any RAPTCIs wishing to try a new sport and join the RAPTC Basketball Male/Female Team, please contact the team secretary; all levels welcome.
