The first 12 months in my post as the QMSI in Gibraltar have passed in the blink of an eye. It has been an exceptionally busy year for the Regt, deploying to Bahrain to provide the Force Protection Platoon for the newly built naval support facility which was opened by HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.
In the absence of an SMI, the gym staff have assisted to ensure a positive start to the opening of a new swimming pool facility for serving personnel and their families. Inside the complex is an additional fitness suite, which also serves the military community stationed in Gibraltar.
The gym staff hosted the first tri-service Resilience Games Competition. This involved individual and team challenges and not only raised further awareness of PT, but also resulted in an increased working relationship between all three services.
The Royal Gibraltar Regiment have started celebrating its 80th anniversary with two charity concerts performed at Saint Michael’s cave. The bands of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment and Irish Guards were joined by Welsh Tenor, Wynne Evans, best known as the
singer from the Go Compare ads, the concerts have raised a significant amount of money for local charities.
Due to the Regt’s geographical location it has been difficult to consistently compete in team sporting events, although the RG football team did manage to get to the semi-finals of the Infantry 6’s in Aldershot. There has been lots of individual success with members of the Regiment being selected to represent Gibraltar at Hockey, Futsal, Judo and long distance running.
Gibraltar hosted the RAPTC football team in Sep for their pre- season training camp which was a huge success. We played two fixtures against the RG and local team, Bruno’s Magpies.
2019 is set to be a great year as Gibraltar hosts the Island games. We have been liaising with the Island Games committee to ensure smooth running of the judo competition that will be held in the gymnasium (no pressure). It is also the year the RG football team will enjoy their first ever OSV to Miami for a 9-day tour.
A productive 2018 and lots to look forward to over the next year.

PRIMARY CARE REHABILITATION FACILITY BRUNEI
SSgt (SSI) P Rai RAPTC
This is my second year in current post as an Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor (ERI) in Primary Care Rehabilitation Facility (PCRF). PCRF team comprises of 2 Physiotherapists and 1 ERI. From rehabilitation perspective, we provide support to British Forces Brunei (BFB) Garrison, which includes 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles (2RGR) (they swap with 1 RGR usually every 3 years) and multiple supporting units in section/platoon strength including non-military entitled personnel.
PCRF is a department within the Primary Care Medical Facility (PCMF) building. PCMF comprises of PCRF, Dental centre, Doctors, Nurses, Medics, Pharmacy, AELO (RAF) and permanent civilian staffs including LECs. Due to different departments from various backgrounds working under the same roof creates a unique environment, challenges and experience to work. As an uplifting project PCRF is going to have its very own gymnasium and the provisional date of completion is by the end of June 2019. Also new PTE has already been approved and it’s moving forward after overcoming the challenges of being overseas, particularly in a remote location such as Brunei i.e., 8 hours’ time zone, shipping times and supply chain difficulties.
On behalf of PCMF, on June 18 I organised ‘Run for Life’ charity event in support of PTSDUK to raise awareness within BFB garrison and the local community. The event was very successful and managed to raise fund of BND$4069.00 as a result this event was recognised as ‘Superstar Team’ by PTSDUK. Massive thanks go to my PCMF team (mainly PCRF team being very supportive) without them this event would not have been so successful.
Also, liaising with SSgt (SSI) Brightey in mainstream role, when time permits, I have been able to share my knowledge through lesson/workshop to BFB Gar AAPTIs as part of their CPD. I have to mention albeit they did not enjoy Foam Rolling session as they would with resistance training, at the end they appreciated it.
Apart from work, there is also an opportunity for AT, recently Garrison (OC Dental Centre) organised Skiing Type 3 AT to Japan for 11 days which was a great experience. Lastly, from family perspective I have found this posting great with lots of travelling opportunities and particularly school facility is excellent.
