5TH BATTALION THE RIFLES
SSgt (SSI) P Hanna RAPTC
Hectic, daunting, fast paced and new challenges are just some of the words I would use to describe my rst year with 5 RIFLES. The Battalion has had little respite after returning
from Herrick 20. What is normally a more relaxed and reserved period, this time has been frantically paced for every member of the Battalion. I arrived in January 2016 and immediately went to work on improving the gym facilities and revising the PT regime to ensure that the Companys were ready for the short notice tasking given to the Battalion. Shortly after settling in, I was tasked to co-ordinate the rst ever 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade Festival of Sports in the absence of the Bde SMI, the event soon increased in size to include all the units that still remained within BA(G).
However, there would be no rest for the wicked as they say, the Battalion identi ed a short window of opportunity to conduct an event that they have been absent from since 2012; Inter Coy boxing. With the short amount of time to train, the Company teams went under a tough 6 weeks training programme and after 24 prelim ghts, 48 ghters were whittled down to just 18 boxers including 2 female ghters. The prelim bouts saw straight punching, high hands and high spirits. The nal night was set up with 9 extremely competitive bouts in front of over 600 spectators from across the Battalion including guests from 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade.
With some well-deserved Christmas leave out of the way the Battalion will now deploy on CT1 training on Sennelager training area in preparation for Exercising in Canada on EX PRARIE STORM and then look forward to a arms plot move to Bulford in line with Army 2020.
