Race the Sun
In Apr 15 we entered a team in the Race the Sun event which is organised every year by 2 Signals Regt who are based in York. This is a 15 leg, multi discipline race held in N Yorkshire covering a total distance of 182 miles. The ATC (P) team was made up solely by members of the gym staff who had all volunteered to take part in a leg of the race. The legs were very varied ranging from a 6 kilometre Kayak; a half marathon; 1 kilometre open water swim; 8 mile loaded march and nishing with a stretcher race to name a few. After a poor start in the Kayak we managed to get ourselves back into 3rd position half way through the day; we then had 2 very poor legs which were the open water swim and the cycle orienteering, which dropped us too far behind the leaders resulting in a low placed nish position. This is a great event and takes a lot of time and effort to organise; we will be going back next year and after some remedial training in certain areas hope for a better nish.
The Half Ironman
On Friday 28th Aug 15 seven members from the Army Training Centre Pirbright took part in a Half Ironman in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund. The seven members of staff plus one member from the pool had to complete a 1.2 mile swim; followed by 56 mile bike ride; followed by a half marathon around camp consisting of 13.1 miles, totalling 70.3 miles all together.
All members had to complete the overall distance in less than 7 hours with the nal member crossing the line in 6 hrs 1 min. All members of the team were pleased with completing the challenge for such a great cause.
The Coast to Coast to Coast Bike Ride
The next event on the calendar was the Coast to Coast to Coast bike ride setting off from Morecombe to Bridlington which was to be completed over a 3 day period. The route taken is known as The Way of the Roses and is dictated by the Yorkshire white rose and the Lancaster red rose (side bye side) and the route takes you over the Pennines and the Yorkshire dales. Day 1 of the event would see the six riders make their way over hilly 112 miles from Morecombe to York. Day 2 was the atter but longer of the 3 Days going from York to Bridlington and back which ended up being 127 miles. The nal day would see the now tired team cycle the nal 112 miles back to the start at Morecombe. The 3 days combined had a total distance of 351 miles over dif cult terrain with the team managing to raise a total of £2,666.52 for the ABF.

This is my second year in post and it has continued to be a fast paced and exciting job. We have seen an increase in the amount of reserve recruits coming through which has a large impact on weekend work and we are due for a 17% increase in the number of regular recruits over the next few months. The new Common Military Syllabus (CMS), which consists of more S&C lessons focusing on teaching correct movement patterns, has been running for 7 months and early signs are that the tness levels are the same, but there has been a decrease in injuries; de nitely a good thing.
I am now on my second MAA, Capt (MAA) J Murdoch RAPTC took over from Capt (MAA) R Windard RAPTC who departed to the CI
role at the ASPT. Both have done an amazing job of supporting me and guiding the ship whilst allowing me the freedom to run all aspects of training.
During the busy training programme we have still found the time to organise some very successful charity events which were headed up by our 3 very competent Sgts – Dexter Fox, Dhan Pun and Sam Smith. ATC (P) can be a very demanding role for Sgts arriving straight from the Class 1 course but it gives them a great opportunity in the management of a gymnasium and a large number of AAPTIs setting them up well for when they eventually get assigned a eld force unit.
