ARTISTIC LEGACY

        Podi Hamuduruwo

Galboda Gnanissara Thera, affectionately known as
Podi Hamuduruwo (little monk) born in 1943 in the
village of Galboda, has had a remarkable journey as a
Buddhist monk. At the age of eight, he was ordained
at Gangaramaya, under the guidance of Devundara
Ratanajothi (Devundara Vaccissara Thera), who became
        one of his teachers.
In 1959, when Devundara Vaccissara Thera fell
ill and became visually impaired and disabled, Podi
Hamudruwo took over the administration of the temple
at the young age of 16. He even raised funds to support
        Vaccissara Thera’s medical expenses.
           Podi Hamuduruwo’s dedication and leadership
did not go unnoticed. In 2003, he was appointed as the
Sanghanayaka of the Western Province in Sri Lanka by
the Malwathu Chapter, one of the two main Buddhist
monastic chapters in the country. He also held the
position of Sanghanayaka for Sri Lankan Buddhist
temples in the United States, although he later renounced
        the position.

Recognizing his knowledge and contributions, the
Asgiriya Chapter bestowed upon him the prestigious
title of “Darshana Visharada,” which is equivalent to a
        doctorate degree.

Through his unwavering commitment and his tireless
efforts in temple administration, Podi Hamuduruwo has
made a significant impact on the spiritual and cultural
landscape of Sri Lanka. His dedication to the teachings
of Buddha has earned him respect and admiration both
within and outside the Buddhist community.
What sets Podi Hamuduruwo apart is his dynamic
and progressive approach. While rooted in tradition and
respect for the ancient wisdom of the faith, he recognizes
the need to adapt to the modern world and address the
        contemporary challenges faced by society
           Podi Hamuduruwo’s humanitarian efforts have
extended beyond the confines of the temple walls. His
unwavering commitment to social welfare has led him to
initiate numerous charitable projects by actively engaging
with the community, he embodies the core tenets of
        Buddhism—compassion and empathy.
