Bringing the Concept to Life
This year the international community will commemorate the 50th Anni-
versary of the United Nations. When looking at Geneva International from
historical perspective, it is obvious that with the rapid development of multilat-
eral diplomacy, this city has a chance of acquiring even more importance and
become a Europolis of the United Nations – one of the edifices of the UN
global architecture of peace, cooperation, and security – the major crossroad of
people and ideas. However, these are not only the diplomats and the interna-
tional civil servants who provide Geneva’s multilateral landscape. The city
which is also an important European cultural and business centre attracts peo-
ple from many walks of life.
This book is the first complete survey of the ethnic mosaic of Geneva.
Mr. Louis Necker, Director of the Ethnographic Museum, made a superb
job in collecting and analyzing a wealth of information regarding the
ethnic composition of the city, the traditions and the ways of life of different
national communities. In his book the ethnic mosaic of Geneva looks like an
attractive piece of art. However, his book is not just informative and
enlightening. It is also very well-written, eloquent and a pleasure to read. I am
sure this book will be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of many
Genovese, as well as all those people around the world who come to love
Geneva.
