Bringing the Concept to Life

I am very honoured to have with us tonight the Conseiller d'État,
Mr. Robert Cramer, the Conseiller National and former President of the
Grand Conseil de la République et Canton de Geneve, Mr. Jean Spielmann as
well as the rector of the University of Geneva, Mr. Maurice Bourquin.

If today, Geneva is appreciated for its advance in reform, it is due to the
joint efforts of the diplomatic community and of the host country. Indeed, to
make an applause, you need to have two hands.

For me, Walter represents the diplomat in the best classical sense of the
term. It was said in the nineteenth century that diplomacy is not only the art of
negotiations but first of all, application of mind and tact in dealing with
               international affairs.

I cannot go without mentioning that the month of Ambassador Gyger
coincides with another important event, UNOG's Bazaar, where the role of
Birsen, his charming wife, is very prominent. Birsen has brought special human
charm to the international community in Geneva.

Although deeply sorry that you are leaving Geneva, I am at the same time
very glad that the next appointment will be India, a very prominent Member of
the International community, a county with rich historical traditions and bright
               future.

Thank you and I wish you new success in your diplomatic endeavours.
