Bringing the Concept to Life
Last month, at the Palais des Nations, the IPU hosted a meeting in
preparation for the Conference of speakers and heads of national assemblies to
be held in New York in June in connection with the Millennium Assembly.
Alongside regional organizations and parliamentarians, UNOG attaches
the utmost importance to cooperation with all other actors on the world scene
such as local authorities, mass-media and NGOs, which have their largest
representation here in Geneva.
In conclusion, I cannot but stress that what has been achieved in Geneva at
the threshold of the new millennium, is the result of the very close working
relationship that we have developed with the authorities of Switzerland, our
host country. I highly appreciate my regular talks at the highest level in Bern,
visits of the members of the Federal Council and parliamentarians to Geneva,
as well as the very close relations we enjoy with the authorities of the Canton
and the City of Geneva. The continued solution, in business-like fashion, to the
range of issues arising on a daily basis with respect to the diplomatic communi-
ty is the best way to keep cooperation with Geneva International in good shape.
To close, the trademark of Geneva International is its cooperation in
action. Through this, Geneva greatly improves the quality of peoples' daily lives
throughout the world in often unpublicized but concrete ways. This continues
to remain the major source of inspiration for all of us - international civil
servants - working in Geneva.
