            TO INFORMATION SYSTEM USERS GROUP OF THE DIPLOMATIC
                                    COMMUNITY

          F         ollowing is the statement made today by Vladimir Petrovsky, Direc-
                    tor-General of  the  United  Nation's  Office at Geneva to the
                    Information  System Users  Group  (ISUG)  of  the  Diplomatic
          Community, meeting at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property
          Organization:

              "It  gives  me great  pleasure  to address  you,  the  members of the  Geneva
          information Systems User Group on the topic of information exchange services
          and activities of UN Agencies towards Member States.

              The Information Systems  Users Group, created in 1997 immediately
          became  an important part of “Geneva  International”. Due to the ISUG, the
          utilization of information technology is quickly developing in many of our UN
          organizations here in Geneva. UNOG actively supports this process and invites
          all international organizations in Geneva to take part in it.

              Since its inception, the ISUG has done a lot to achieve its aims. It has made
          information and technical facilities available for Missions, organized training
          courses in information technology for Missions staff, promoted a more active
          use of  technology,  and  encouraged  the  donation  of  computer  equipment  to
          Missions of developing countries. Its major undertaking was the development
