Obituary
His Excellency
Homero Hernandez
Sanchez
It was with a heavy heart that we received the sad news about the death of Divas faithful friend
and supporter, His Excellency Homero Hernandez Sanchez, Ambassador and Permanent
Representative of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations Office and the Other International
Organisations in Geneva. It's always difficult to write such a piece about a friend who was always
there, ready to listen and to give advice, a true friend. His Excellency was a strong advocate for
social justice, equal rights, fairness...
Mr Homero Hernandez Sanchez held a BA in literature and philosophy, followed by higher
degrees in law, international studies, political science and international affairs from universities
in Santo Domingo, Geneva, Santiago de Chile and New York. Following the conclusion of his
studies, he embarked on an international career with the multilateral system with the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic. Of his work in this context, we can cite only his role as
a delegate to the Organisation of American States at its Geneva headquarters, from 1972 to 1978,
and his two terms of office as Ambassador to the United Nations here in Geneva, from 1978 to
1982, and then from 2004 to 2016.
A highly cultivated and witty man, Ambassador Hernandez Sanchez was greatly respected for
his keen grasp of international affairs and his sense of diplomacy. He was the author of the prize
winning America Latina en busca de su identitad and continued to write about and fight for his
ideals of social justice and human rights.
Homero, we will miss you -- for your personal integrity, your dedication and your diplomatic
ability, and not at least, for your smile, your jokes and your good advice. Our thoughts go out to
his wife, Charlotte, and to his children and grand-children who will miss their grand-father. May
he rest in peace, and may we never forget him...
