Kaskado Leaf
The Chinese ketepeng plant, or "cascade leaf" in Papua, is one of about 20,000
species from Papua valued for its medicinal properties. This plant is especially
helpful in treating skin diseases like scabies and fungal infections. It is commonly
found in Papua’s lowlands, where it grows naturally in rainforests and damp
habitats.
Locals use cascade leaves by grinding two leaves and mixing with betel lime
to apply on affected skin areas. The plant’s medicinal uses include treating skin
ailments, ringworm, scabies, and even more severe conditions like syphilis and
bronchitis. Cascade leaves contain beneficial compounds such as flavonoids,
which have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.
This plant is a small shrub growing up to 5 meters tall, with yellow flowers
blooming from May to August. The flowers produce bean-like pods, and the leaves
are long, oval-shaped, and arranged in pairs along reddish stems. Cascade
leaves contain multiple health-beneficial ingredients like alkaloids, saponins, and
tannins.
Known by different names across Indonesia, such as "keto keto" in Java and
"kupang leaves" in Sumatra, the cascade leaf plant is also called "seven golden
candlesticks" in English. The plant’s natural growth and rich chemical composition
make it a valuable resource for traditional medicine in Papua and beyond.
