Sago

Sago plays a crucial role in the lives of the people of Tanah Papua. It serves as a
source of food, clothing, housing, and as part of the local ecosystem. The starch
from sago is a low-sugar carbohydrate, and the sago caterpillar provides protein
for the local population. Sago leaves are used in traditional clothing and are woven
into items like the noken (a traditional shoulder bag). Additionally, the leaves are
used for roofing homes, while the midrib forms the walls, and the skin serves as
the floor. Sago roots also supply water, benefiting both humans and the
                   surrounding ecosystem.
Historically, sago was a major carbohydrate source throughout Indonesia,
as depicted in stone carvings at Borobudur Temple. However, modern agricultural
methods have pushed sago to be mainly found in Eastern Indonesia, with the
largest sago forests in Papua. In Raja Ampat, sago is still widely used for food,
like the traditional papeda (sago porridge), as well as for snacks such as sinole
and cakes. Locals also use sago for the construction of homestays, maintaining
the tradition despite the growing use of zinc roofing.
The exploitation of sago leaves and trees for homestay construction and
other purposes has led to concerns about the depletion of sago forests. In 2018,
the Raja Ampat Local Business and Livelihood Association (PERJAMPAT)
initiated replanting efforts and called for government restrictions on resort
licensing to protect the sago trees. Similarly, Charles Toto, a Papuan food activist,
launched a petition in 2018 urging the Papua and West Papua Governors to issue
regulations to protect sago forests, with over 298,000 signatures in support.
The destruction of sago forests has also contributed to environmental issues,
such as flooding in Jayapura, following logging for housing and infrastructure
development. Toto advocates for the recognition of sago as a vital food source,
similar to rice, by promoting its distribution to civil servants and encouraging
younger generations to appreciate sago's importance in their cultural heritage.
                                                                                    Adapted from: econusa.id
