Bandicoot

The Land of Papua is renowned for its rich biodiversity, with species found in both
lowland and highland areas that are similar to those in Southeast Asia and
Australia. In the highlands, however, species are more unique due to their
isolation. Papua is home to 602 bird species, 223 reptiles, and 125 mammals, with
a high percentage of these species being endemic, meaning they are found
                   nowhere else in the world.
One of the endemic species of Papua is the bandicoot, a marsupial found in
various regions across Papua, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. In Papua, the
bandicoot lives in islands like Waigeo, Biak, and Yapen, and in areas up to 1,550
meters above sea level. Out of the 8 bandicoot species in the region, two are
endemic: the northern brown bandicoot and the Raffay bandicoot. Bandicoots
have a long nose and are known for their yellowish-brown fur, with nimble front
legs used for digging and strong hind legs for jumping.
Though bandicoots are considered pests by local farmers because they
destroy crops like yam, cassava, and corn, they are also a source of protein for
the local population. In some areas, people hunt bandicoots to protect their crops,
and the meat is sold in markets for high prices, ranging from IDR 100,000 to IDR
                   200,000 per animal.
The biodiversity of Papua plays an essential role in sustaining local
livelihoods and maintaining ecosystem balance. Forests in the region act as vital
"supermarkets" for indigenous communities and contribute to global efforts in
carbon sequestration and climate regulation. Protecting Papua's forests and
biodiversity is crucial for combating the climate crisis and achieving environmental
                   sustainability.
                                                                                    Adapted from: econusa.id

                     2. Why are bandicoots considered pests by local farmers in Papua?
                     3. How does the biodiversity of Papua contribute to the local economy and

                        ecosystem?

                     4. What role do Papua's forests play in the efforts to combat climate change?
