                   Menginang

Chewing areca nuts (menginang) is a deeply rooted tradition in Papua, especially
among coastal communities. Unlike in other regions where it is mostly practiced
by the elderly, in Papua, people of all ages, from children to adults, engage in this
daily habit. Areca nuts are believed to have health benefits, including aiding
digestion, strengthening teeth, and promoting detoxification. They are also
thought to help shrink the uterus after childbirth and boost male stamina.
Areca nuts are often chewed with lime flour made from crushed clam shells
to neutralize the bitter taste. Betel stems are also consumed alongside to balance
the flavor. Known as "the Country of Areca Nut," Papua sees this practice as a
symbol of solidarity and a means of socializing. Areca nuts are present at almost
every traditional ceremony and gathering, helping break the ice and foster
                   connection among people.
Areca nuts, a fruit from the Arecaceae family, grow in Papua and other
regions of the Pacific, Asia, and Eastern Africa. Several types are found in Papua,
including the recently discovered Areca jokowi. In addition to its cultural
significance, areca nut plays a key economic role in Papua, particularly in areas
like Skouw Sae and Holtekamp. The areca nut industry is seen as a promising
commodity for export, with efforts underway to develop Areca catechu for the
                   global market.
Protecting the areca nut and its cultural practice is vital for preserving the
identity of the indigenous Papuan people. It not only sustains the region's social
traditions but also supports its economy, making it essential to safeguard this
                   important cultural and economic asset.
                                                                                    Adapted from: econusa.id
