Over the years, I have had more than my fair share of good fortune in welcoming Indonesian dignitaries to Aotearoa
New Zealand. Having spent the early parts of my professional career in hospitality, I always made sure their visits
befitting to the cordial welcome commonly afforded to visitors in this great country.
The pinnacle being the State Visit of President Joko Widodo, accompanied by Madam Iriana Joko Widodo, in March
2018 as it was instrumental in paving the way for the Indonesia-New Zealand Comprehensive Partnership Agreement.
It was the centerpiece in the celebration of 60 years of diplomatic relations.
Despite only being on the ground for less than 24 hours, the President’s visit has left indelible legacies in the two
countries’ relation. The visit was of particular personal significance as it took place less than a year following my
appointment. As any Ambassadors would tell you, that is a feat in itself.
