The 1st Pacific Exposition in Auckland in 2019 has provided a momentous juncture for Indonesia as it
marks the first big-scale event ever organized by Indonesia in the Pacific. It is later hailed as the biggest
and most comprehensive exhibition of its kind in the region.
As I reflect on the historic occasion, my mind kept remarking on the equally momentous time when
Indonesia, represented by Foreign Minister, H.E. Retno Marsudi, signed agreements to officially open
diplomatic relations with the Cook Islands and Niue, represented by Prime Minister Hon. Henry Puna, and
Prime Minister Sir Toke Tukufia Talagi, respectively, on 12 July 2019. I am proud to call both distinguished
Leaders as good friends of mine ever since.
Amongst the various implementations and manifestations of Indonesia’s commitment to elevate its
contributions in the Pacific, the opening of diplomatic relations with the Cook Islands and Niue is certainly
of notable significance. It gives further honor for us to have both countries under the accreditation wings
of the Embassy of Indonesia in Wellington.
The ties with both countries have been growing even prior to the official signing. With the official
recognition now in place, the mutually beneficial cooperation and partnerships will only grow stronger for
the benefit of the people.
