Diving in the
Bahamas
For many years, the Bahamas, a group of islands
in the Atlantic, has been a popular vacation spot.
The islands attract a lot of divers. Divers from many
countries come to see the wide variety of fish in the
islands’ clear waters. The fish differ from season
to season. Spring is the best time to see mahi-mahi.
In October, manta rays are more common. In the
winter, divers may even see hammerhead sharks. A great hammerhead

For experienced divers, the blue holes of the Bahamas are Islands
especially interesting. From above, these blue holes look like
deep blue ponds. In fact, they are entrances to underwater

caves.
There are over 1000 of these blue holes in the Bahamas.
They are one of the most unusual environments on Earth. At
the surface, there is a thin layer of fresh rainwater. Below

that, there is salt water because the caves open to the sea.
