                                EXPLORE

1 READ the conversation about a website that creates pictures of characters
                          CD2-09
from literature. Notice the words in bold.

                                              The Composites

Katya: Hey, Helen, you’ve been on the computer for two hours! What are you
                                          looking at?
Helen: This website called The Composites. Have you seen it? Brian Davis, the
website designer, had an interesting idea. He decided to use a computer
program to create pictures of fictional characters. Last year, he put the
                                                                             1
pictures on the website. Now you can see what the characters from books
                                          really look like.

Katya: What kind of computer program does that?
Helen: It’s the same program the police use to create pictures of criminals. It’s used
                                                                                                         2
to help people when they’ve witnessed a crime. The program lets them
                                                                              3
create a composite picture of the criminal for the police. It lets them choose
                                                           4
the right eyes, nose, hair, and so on.
Katya: OK, but why is the website using it for characters from books?
Helen: Well, in movies based on books, the characters
often look very different from their description
in the book, right? I’m often disappointed
                                          by that.
Katya: Yes, that’s true. I read the novel
                                          Dracula last month. The main
                                          character in the book looks
                                          completely different in
                                          the movie.

                                Helen: OK, let’s see . . . Look, here’s
a picture of Dracula on the
                                          website. Does he look more
like the description in the book?

                                1 fictional: not real
2 criminal: a person who commits a serious crime
3 witness: see or observe an event such as a crime
4 composite: made up of different pieces or elements

                                                        A composite illustration of Count
                                                        Dracula based on the description
                                                        in Dracula by Bram Stoker
