Good Times and Bad Times for the Inuit
The Inuit are the native people of the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, Russia, and
the United States. In recent years, climate change has been making life difficult for the Inuit
people of the Arctic. Their traditional culture has been under attack. Sea ice is very important
in their lives. Recently, the sea ice has been melting. No sea ice means no seal hunting. No
seal hunting means no meat for the dogs, and dogs are very important to the Inuit. These
changes have caused social problems in Inuit communities everywhere.
In some countries, however, life for Inuit people has been improving. In Alaska, many
Inuit have been earning money from shares in local companies. In Canada, changes to
1
the law have given the Inuit more independence from the national government. They live in
regions that earn money from mining and pipelines. Russia, however, has no special areas or
2
programs for its Inuit people.
For the Inuit, Greenland is special. Around 85 percent of the island’s people are Inuit. The
Inuit have been driving dog sleds across the icy land for over 700 years. Denmark used to
govern Greenland. However, since 2008, the Inuit people of Greenland have been running
their own country.
1 share: an equal part of the ownership of a company
2 pipeline: a system of connected pipes used to carry gas, water, or oil over long distances
Traveling by dog sled is an
important part of Inuit culture.
