Recently, the McMurtry team joined a car sale company, Carwow, and had youtube presenter Mark Watson
head for the track. In the closing days of December 2022, McMurtry 's Spéirling, the electric car that had
already set a record at the 1.16 mile Goodwood Hill Climb in June 2022, hit 60 mph in 1.4 seconds, a
0-100 mph time of 2.63 seconds, and ran the quarter-mile in 7.97 seconds. The car was fitted with drag
slicks. These times are exceptionally notable because they were measured without the use of rollout, a
technical advantage normally employed when marking EV acceleration figures.
Rollout allows timing to begin one foot after the starting position. By comparison Rimac's Nevera,
considered a hypercar, clocked a quarter mile in 8.5 seconds, while Pininfarina Battista's hyper car takes
1.79 seconds to hreach 60 mph. This is the current record for production cars, however, the time includes
the use of rollout.
The one seater Speirling is a tight fitting, pure, track terror. Weighing less than 2,200 pounds it makes
1,000 horse power, all sent to the rear wheels.
For those who would question whether such a vehicle has any practical use in today's world, McMurtry
points out that its battery can achieve a range in excess of 300 miles in normal driving , compared with 25
minutes of use at track speed.
The news is that McMurtry is currently working on a road version of the Speirling. Order books have already
been opened. The production will be limited and the cost is expected to be in the seven figure range.
McMurtry says they are already planning for a smaller, lighter version of the Speirling in the future.
