Her daughter Princess Anne rode Queen's Goodwill in eventing competition at the 1976 Olympic Games,
the first Royal to compete at the Olympics. Earlier the Princess Royal had been a gold medalist in the
sport at the European Championships in 1971.
The Queen's granddaughter, Zara Tindall, has also been a respected competitive rider, taking silver at
the 2012 Olympics in eventing. On her medal wall there are silvers and golds from the European
Championships, the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games, and a silver in 2014 from the FEI World
Equestrian Games.
Polo is also a tradition for the men of the Royal family while Prince Philip was recognized for his efforts
to bring back the sport of competitive driving. He was a regular competitor in the International Driving
Grand Prix until his retirement from the sport in 2003.
In 2014, the Year of the Horse, The Queen, herself, was awarded the first FEI ( Federation Equestrian
Internationale) Lifetime achievement award, a white gold brooch made up of nine, intertwined, diamond
horseshoes, for her lifelong contributions to the equine industry.
As a young girl, Elizabeth competed at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, winning the Pony and Dogcart
event at the first year the show was held. The acclaimed Royal Windsor show is now one of the largest
multi discipline event horse shows in the world. Her horses continue to win top prizes at the Royal
Windsor and she continues to be clearly delighted when any of them succeed in an event.
On her 96th birthday, the Royal Show released to the news media ( below) a portrait photo taken by
Henry Dallal, showing The Queen with two of her favorite Fell ponies. Story and videos conclude on page 16
