Eight Things You Might Not Know about HM Queen Elizabet h II
- The Queen is one of 124,000 people age 95-99 living in the UK
- The Queen was born on April 21 but her official birthday celebration is the 2nd
Saturday of June, a tradition that began because HM Edward VII's birthday was in
November and the weather was better in June for a birthday parade. In 2022,
however, the tradition is being broken so the official birthday can be celebrated on
June 2, the beginning of the Platinum Jubilee Weekend being celebrated as a Bank
Holiday. ( The Queen is now 96)
- Elizabeth R doesn't have a passport. Since all passports are issued in the Queen's
name, she doesn't need one and, while she still drives, she also doesn't have a driver's
license, for the same reason.
- Having served on active duty, she is a World War II veteran and the only living head of
state that can make that claim.
- In 1947 she paid for her wedding dress with ration coupons, using them to purchase
the ivory satin she chose for the day.
- She is believed to be the first head of state to send an email, doing so in 1976 at a
technology demonstration. The email was sent over ARPANET, the forerunner of the
modern internet.
- She is reportedly a safe but speedy driver and adept with a manual transmission.
- She is now a sold-out Barbie Doll with a Platinum Jubilee edition by Mattel
