STUDENT VOICE
HEALTH & WELLNESS - Mackenzie Wightman
Mackenzie Wightman, a grade 12 student, has a co-
op placement at Pharmasave. “Pharmasave hired me
a week after I started my co-op placement. I was told
that they had never hired a co-op student before!” MacKenzie’s placement relates to her future aspirations of wanting to go into nursing. MacKenzie’s pathway has had her:
• Participating in the SHSM program in Health & Wellness
• Completing Standard First Aid and CPR along with other free certifications
MacKenzie’s passion is to work in a hospital with children or in a nursing home. Mackenzie’s advice she would offer to grade 9 students is, “you need to figure out what you want to do in life, not what others want you to do”.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS - Abby Strome
Abby was unsure of what she wanted to do and felt that signing up for the SHSM program would help her to decide. She made a last minute decision to do a co-op. Abby is surprised at how much she likes her co-op, working in the Pharmacy at the Wingham Health Clinic. It has introduced her to new opportunities. She also has an interest in physiotherapy and
optometry. Her pathway experience thus far has had her:
• Completing First Aid and CPR certifications offered in the SHSM program, good certifications to have before entering the healthcare field
The advice that Abby has for students coming into high school, is not to feel pressured into a career choice in grade 9. She pushed herself to try to figure out what she wanted to do and this stressed her out. It wasn’t until grade 11 that she was able to figure out a path that felt right for her!
Chad Kregar, Deputy Chief of the North Huron Fire Department, along with his fellow firefighters demonstrate to SHSM students at F.E Madill Secondary School the basics of fire safety and fire extinguisher training.
