                     STUDENT VOICE
HOSPITALITY & TOURISM - Emily Wood
Emily, a senior student at Mitchell District High School,
plans on attending Fanshawe College for the Baking and Pastry Arts Management Program. Emily’s pathway choices had her:
• Enrolled in the Hospitality and Tourism Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program
• Active on the yearbook committee and competitive in Reach for the Top
• Playing the bass clarinet and alto saxophone in the Concert & Jazz Band
• Completing a series of certifications, activities and courses in grades 11 and 12
• Co-op; she enjoyed being able to choose something of interest to her and test drive it before having to decide her career path
• Completing ICE (Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship) training
which she enjoyed because she was able to explore Rheo Thomp- son’s Candy in Stratford
• Receiving her CPR certification along with Customer Service Training
Emily’s interest in baking flourished as she participated in the SHSM program that focused on the culinary arts. Emily’s advice for students new to secondary school is to, “encourage more people to get their SHSM seal because it’s relatively easy to obtain and a great experience. You also acquire skills that you can use now and in your future!”
AGRICULTURE - Serena Hinz
Serena is a 5th year student who lives on a dairy farm and graduated with
her SHSM Red Seal last spring. Agriculture has always been a part of her life and Serena has an interest in taking over the family farm. Her high school pathway thus far has Serena:
• Participating in the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program,
“a great opportunity to further your education and personal growth”
• Completing in ICE (Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship) workshops along with Customer Service Certification, First Aid and Working at Heights Training, all paid for through participation in SHSM
• Completing co-op at the Vet Clinic in Mitchell while considering a career as a veterinarian
“The SHSM gets you out of the classroom setting and into a more collaborative hands on team work setting,” says Serena, who learned from the Customer Service training that
“you should treat everyone as a customer. Small details can change a lot and a smile goes a long way”.
