  STUDENT VOICE
APPRENTICESHIP - Spencer Frayne
Spencer, a grade 12 student, is striving for a welding
apprenticeship. He is working at Echo Tech making
military parts. Spencer’s highlight is TIG welding and he
is learning a lot at his placement from an experienced
welder. Spencer has grown up helping his dad work on vehicles
and that’s when he knew that he wanted to learn a trade. His pathway experience to date has him:
• Completing co-op because “you can pick what you want to do and go with it”
• Completing certifications through SHSM such as Chainsaw and The Great
Outdoors courses
• Participating in dual credits which he recommends “big time.
The teachers are helpful and resourceful”
• Experiencing college life through his dual credit experience
Advice that Spencer would give to someone coming into high school would be to pick classes that you want or need. “I took a lot of tech classes and that is when I was introduced to TIG welding. I learned a lot from my manufacturing teacher, Mr. Quance and Ms. Ryan has been helpful with getting me into dual credits and SHSM.”
ENVIRONMENTAL - Cory Thibodeau
Cory, a grade 12 student, has a co-op placement at the YMCA and at the firehall. Cory is interested in getting into Policing and hopes his co-op placements will help advance his career.
His pathway experience to date has him:
• Experiencing SHSM, which gets him “out of the school building to see
how things work along with getting an idea of the workforce”.
• Recommending 100% the co-op program and believes everyone
should take it.
• When asked about SHSM, he said, “Go for it, you have nothing to lose! It’s good to have the red seal on your diploma along with the certifications and training that is offered.”
Cory is contemplating joining the Military and someday becoming a Police Officer.
