Monastic wisdom
Benedictine wisdom has taught men and women, generation after generation, not only how
to be more Christian, but also how to be more human:
- It tries to direct their eyes and hearts towards heaven but keeps their feet solidly on earth.
- It is based on the right distance from the world to enter a deeper relationship with it.
- It is based on love of God, brothers/sisters and, through stability and fidelity to the place
– amatores Dei, fratrum et loci – hence the deep involvement of monasteries with
their environment.
- It contains a treasure of invaluable insights on leadership, management, and strategy,
highly regarded in many quarters.
- It is a model for Christian community life and a source for the development of social
principles.
What is a monastery?
A monastery is a place where a community of women or men live and commit to a life of
witness to the presence and action of God in the world. It is a place of contemplation, prayer,
work and community living.
