DAY 23

How the Lack of Sleep Affects You

Don’t fight with the pillow, but lay down your head, and
kick every worriment out of the bed.

                                                — Edmund Vance Cooke

Two-thirds of adults fail to obtain the recommended eight hours of
sleep every night. I doubt you are surprised by this fact. But you may be
surprised by the consequences routinely sleeping less than six or seven
hours a night demolishes your immune system, more than doubling
             your risk of cancer.
Insufficient sleep is a crucial lifestyle factor determining whether

you will develop Alzheimer’s disease. Even moderate reductions for
just one week disrupt blood sugar levels, profoundly classifying you as
             pre-diabetic as quickly as that.
Sleeping for short amounts of time increases the likelihood of your
coronary arteries becoming blocked and brittle, setting you on a path
toward cardiovascular disease, stroke, and congestive heart failure.
I hope I’ve convinced you that getting a good night’s sleep is key to

             living a healthy, abundant life!
