Work
Experience
Rationale
Work experience is a core element of Samaritan College’s careers education program. It is a college
expectation that senior students participate in at least one week of work experience to help them
explore the workplace and learn more about potential career paths. Work experience aims to assist
students in their transition from school to work, to develop a greater awareness of their abilities and
interests, and to make appropriate, well-informed and realistic career decisions.
Age
Students must generally be 15 years or older before participating in work experience. Students
aged 14 years cannot participate in work experience unless the principal is satisfied that the student
will derive measurable benefits from doing so. Workplace Learning Procedures 2020, p. 12
Work Experience Criteria
Work experience:
Is a short-term (i.e. not more than 40 days per year or more than the equivalent of 300 hours)
Is unpaid (i.e. students are not to receive any form of remuneration, such as payment, vouchers
or gifts)
Includes work shadowing and work observation
A student cannot undertake work experience with the same provider more than once a year.
Students must be directly supervised by persons who are suitably qualified and competent in the
relevant task a student is undertaking.
A parent/guardian cannot directly supervise their child(ren).
