Poem
The Pill that Promised Peace
Aaron T. Mathew
(Roll No. 260)
In shadow’s embrace, where worries did dwell,
Lived David the brother, who knew life too well.
For Thomas, his sibling, in wheelchair he’d stay,
A constant reminder of joys passed away.
The work piled so high, a mountain of stress,
Deadlines like dragons, his spirit would press.
“I need to escape!” he cried, with a weary sigh,
A colleague, so cunning, offered a pill to try.
“Just one little pill,” the friend did declare,
“Will melt all your troubles, and banish all care.”
So David, he swallowed, a gulp and a fright,
And the world turned to rainbows, bathed in golden light.
But the magic soon faded, the peace did depart,
The pill, oh so tempting, now ruled his poor heart.
He craved it, he needed it, day after long day,
And shadows grew deeper, as joy slipped away.
Poor Thomas, his brother, grew scared and confused,
By anger and shouting, his feelings misused.
One night, David crumbled, a victim of plight,
He swallowed the bottle, and vanished from sight.
Thomas, returning, found David forlorn,
His eyes glazed and vacant, his spirit withdrawn.
He tried to reach out, but his wheelchair did sway,
And tumbled and tipped, as he cried out in dismay.
With trembling fingers, he reached for the phone,
A desperate plea, a whispered, low groan.
“Help!” he cried softly, “My brother needs aid!”
As the world spun around him, and shadows invaded.
So listen to me, my friends, young and bright,
Stay far from the shadows, and hold on to light.
For pills can deceive, and bring sorrow and pain,
A path to destruction, again and again.
Find joy in the sunshine, in laughter and play,
Embrace every moment, and brighten each day.
There’s magic in kindness, in friendship so true,
A brighter tomorrow, awaits just for you!
