ABIDE IN MY LOVE
Susan John Mattackal
(Roll No. 819)
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides
in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. John 15:4 esv
Abide/Remain in me, and I in you, is a heartfelt desire of Jesus, that sounds so
challenging…
Yet in the essence of God, which is Love, it is possible and achievable.
The two greatest commandments of Jesus are, ‘to Love God’ and ‘to Love man’
with one’s whole heart and mind. With this layout of Jesus ‘in mind and in heart’,
we conduct ourselves in our everyday lives. This calling is not a far reachable one,
but it’s as near as our heart is.
The faithful followers of God have done it in the yesteryears and so, we can do it.
Abraham, Moses, and David did it; the disciples who lived with Jesus did it; the
followers of Jesus beyond the pages of the Bible did it; and so we can do it too.
John, the disciple of Jesus who understood love and God’s love for mankind,
portrays God as LOVE in his epistles and gospel.
The Love of Jesus that’s poured into our heart spreads out as ‘His fragrance of
Love’ that exudes into our environment and people causing a stir; not because
we love, but because Jesus loves that person and therefore we love.
“Remain/Abide in me, and I in you.”
So then, how can we abide in Jesus?
Highlighting 4 valuable guidelines from The Word of God, The Bible.
1. Acknowledge Jesus is the Son of God.
1 John 4:15 says, Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides
in him, and he in God.
There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given
among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
2. Live in love
1 John 4:16 says God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God
abides in him.
God is love and he desires his sons and daughters to be love. Therefore he
is shaping and molding us to be love - a God like character - throughout our
lifetime. Hence Jesus says ‘Love your enemies’, ‘bless those who persecute
you’ and ‘forgive those who sin against you’. This calls for endurance.
