  Welcome
Caring for children and young people
    LINDA POLLARD CBE DL HON.LLD
CHAIR, LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS TRUST
Welcome to the summer edition of CONNECT. In this edition we’ll be telling you about the fantastic work that happens in Leeds to support
children and young people.
Leeds Children’s Hospital is the jewel in the crown of Yorkshire; providing care to children and young people from across the region, the UK and even internationally.
With more inpatient beds than Alder Hey, Manchester and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Leeds is one of the busiest of its kind in the country. More than 253,000 appointments and procedures take place each year and 10,000 operations are performed in our eight dedicated children’s operating theatres.
What’s more, Leeds Children’s Hospital provides over
30 specialist services operating from 22 hospitals in the region and is the only hospital in the north of England
that can undertake all three of the most common types of transplantation for children and young people: liver, kidney and bone marrow transplantation.
I’m sure you’ll agree that it is a real coup for Leeds to
have these wonderful services right here on our doorstep, further fulfilling our city-wide ambition to be the best place for children and young people to grow up in.
In this issue of CONNECT we’re showcasing some of the work we are doing to transform care for our young patients as well as the contributions we’re making to national decisions about young people’s healthcare for the future.
We’ll also provide an update on our ground-breaking plans for a purpose-built children’s hospital which will house all
of these fantastic services in a modern, child and young person-friendly environment.
I hope you enjoy reading more about the great work we are doing.
The new facility is a purpose-built cardiac hybrid theatre, for undertaking complex heart procedures on children and young people, and an intraoperative MRI facility for neurosurgery. The facility has been made possible thanks to the generous donations of patients, their families, and the public through our charity partner Leeds Cares and the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund’s ‘Keeping the Beat’ campaign.
The new complex is linked directly to the existing theatres in Clarendon Wing and enables cardiac surgeons and cardiologists to work together during the same procedure which means the skills of both specialists can be employed together, reducing treatment time for patients.
The intra-operative MRI scanner allows scans to be done during neurological surgical procedures. For example, surgeons will
be able to see straight away how much of a brain tumour has been removed rather than scanning at a later date to discover
