Old Katamon
At the end of the 19th century, (the) Greek Orthodox bought the
neighborhood’s lands. But in the beginning of the 20th century,
when financial problems began in the Greek community, they
decided to sell the lands.
A lot of rich Christian Arabs bought lands in the neighborhood
and built big luxurious houses, shops and schools in it. Even
embassies of foreign countries like Iraq, Syria and Lebanon came
to the neighborhood.
Katamon is located between the Jewish neighborhoods in the
south and the neighborhoods in the north, and therefore the
Haganah decided to conquer the neighborhood and connect the
Jewish neighborhoods.
The battles in the neighborhood in the War of Independence were
very hard and when they ended the neighborhood was conquered.
After the war many refugees from the Jewish quarter in the old
city came to the neighborhood, and some of them live in the
neighborhood to this
day.

built a synagogue,
called “Refugees of
5708 (1948)”.
