Nachalat Binyamin Pedestrian Mall
Who said that the problem with the apartments in Tel Aviv began only
in the 2000’s? “Nachalat Binyamin” neighborhood was established on
the 5th of December 1909 and had one street- Nachalat Binyamin. The
ones who established the the neighborhood were 40 people (mostly
teachers, craftsmen and small merchants) who wanted to found a similar
neighborhood to “Achuzat Bayit” (that became Tel Aviv).
The goal of the establishers of the neighborhood was to allow not rich
people to buy houses for the same prices that they were paying rent.
In 1911 Nachalat Binyamin connected with Achuzat Bayit (Tel Aviv)
in an agreement. According to the agreement, Tel Aviv will give water
and services to Nachalat Binyamin and Nachalat Binyamin will connect
to Tel aviv and will participate in the expenses of the urban
infrastructure. A year later Nachalat Binyamin was an integral part of
the (going and) developing” Tel Aviv city. In 1985 (they) decided to
make part of Nachalat Binyamin street a pedestrian mall.
