Singing and Protesting
They used to specialize mainly in fried foods, high in fat and salt, but after
the international success of "Meatless Monday", Monday without meat,
New York public schools are advancing another step on the road to
conscious eating - Vegan Friday. Nearly one million students attend the
largest school system in the United States. Once a week they will have to
give up unhealthy food. The one who is intensively promoting the
initiative is the new mayor, Eric Adams, a vegan himself. But not all kids
are excited about the new menu. Some still have a hard time understanding
why [they] replace pizza and cheese with broccoli and apples, and when
you look at the dishes you can understand them. Since last April, the New
York public school system has offered only vegetarian dishes on Fridays,
now the eggs and cheeses are also making their way out but experts say
much more can be done. So, will we see the gospel of veganism in schools
spreading to other countries, or will it remain only in the big, liberal cities?
In any case, it seems that New York needs to work a little more on the
right recipe.
