Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Nine-year-old Ilay dreams, eats and breathes the series ‘Diary of a Wimpy
Kid’. He obviously has all the books, he knows almost by heart all of the
plots of the hero Greg, an illustrated character of a boy in junior high, a
wimp of course, who gets into a lot of trouble. According to the hysteria
last week at the Lev movie theater in Tel Aviv one could easily think that
some TV star or adored singer landed here. But Ilay and the hundreds of
children who were here came to meet an author, the man responsible for
the series that conquered the world and came to launch his eleventh book
in Israel. Who would have believed that what’s hot today is to be a wimp.
You no longer have to be a star athlete or the class queen, it’s perfectly
okay to wear glasses, wear plaid shirts or talk about nuclear physics. The
man leading the revolution and turned nerds popular is an American, a
father of two from Massachusetts, and how unsurprising – a wimp himself.
As a boy he grew up on comic books and dreamt of being a caricaturist,
tried and tried but couldn’t get into the field. He sat down to write an
illustrated book. This was nine years ago, the rest as they say, is history.
The book, printed in hand writing like a child’s diary, integrated with
comic strips, became a crazy bestseller. Last year he passed in sales and
revenues The Queen of children’s books – the author of Harry Potter.
We’ll tell anyone who’s worried that Jeff Kinney doesn’t plan on stopping
soon, on the contrary. As far as he’s concerned wimps rule, (and) the
books will keep coming out.
