The Big Wave of Fires
Two sisters, twins, two houses that caught fire day after day. One in
Talmon, one in Halamish, in one wave of fires. Ofra returns this morning
for the first time to the house that was burned Friday night. She walks in
with her sister Abigail to see the ruins that until last Friday night were still
her home. It happens a little after Sabbath night meal; the fire that was lit
in the near canyon climbs in minutes to the streets and houses, sparks fly
through the air and catch the roofs of some houses and burn them to the
ground. The whole settlement starts to get ready to a mass, swift
evacuation. The instruction was clear – the minute the fire penetrates the
settlement bounds, everyone gets in – on a Sabbath – the car, and leave
everything. Only the next day, on Saturday, Ofra, already in an adjacent
settlement, learns that her house too, just like her sister Abigail’s, was
completely burned. “What’s the chance that two twins, their houses will be
burned day after day?” “And I can’t even help her, I can’t even invite her
to me, like, what do I do?” The Sarousi family’s house was one of the two
houses in Talmon that was hit by the fire, which was lit twice in this fire
wave. In Halamish – eighteen destroyed and scorched houses and many
more damaged. And so, these two who are used to go through everything
together since birth, are now going through this side by side too.
