The Story of Rachel and Akiva
Kalba Savua was a very wealthy man and he had a daughter
named Rachel. Akiva was Kalba Savua’s shepherd. Rachel said
to Akiva: If I marry you, do you promise to learn Torah in a
yeshiva?
Akiva said: If you’ll be my wife, I will learn Torah my whole
life.
Rachel and Akiva got married and Akiva went to learn Torah
and said good bye to Rachel. Twelve years later Akiva came
home and heard an old man on the street talking to his wife
Rachel and asking: Where is your husband? Why isn’t he
coming home? How long will you live as a widow?
Rachel answered: If Akiva had known what I really want from
him he would have stayed in yeshiva. He had said to me that if I
become his wife he will learn Torah his whole life.
Akiva heard the conversation and quietly returned to yeshiva for
twelve more years of studies. After 24 years, Akiva returned to
the town, and the whole town came to see him. From a distance,
he saw Rachel running toward him and falling at his feet. Akiva
approached Rachel and lifted her to her feet and said loudly:
All of my Torah is hers.
All of my studies and wisdom are because of my beloved
Rachel.
